Since I'm now a grandparent myself (effective 8:39 pm, this past Monday, 10/24), I thought I'd take this opportunity to talk about Luna's great-great-grandmother, Mareli McGee Foley, on this, the occasion of what would have been her 99th birthday:

Meet Mareli...

In the years following Mareli's death, I've begun what I hope will be an enduring habit. Like her, I want to make certain that every year of my life contains at least one new thing, one new experience, one new visit, one new book, one new idea. Every year should have in it something you've never done before. So now, at the end of each calendar year, I put together what I call my Mareli List, and enumerate every new experience --something to distinguish the past 12 months with all my personal Firsts. For example, my Mareli List for 2016 includes: a cross-country train trip to San Francisco, a drink in a bar with my son, becoming a grandfather, trying horchata for the first time, watching Hayao Miyazaki movies, and attending a Star Wars themed wedding.

Happy birthday Mareli! Miss you.

It's quite telling, how one's tastes change over time. As a youngster my favourite Sesame Street characters were Cookie Monster, Ernie, and Big Bird (the latter being especially important since we actually share a birthday). Later in life Grover, and then Bert became my favourites; Bert in particular really spoke to me.

Nowadays? Total Oscar fan. Grouch Club 4 Life baby. Now scram.

Have a blessed 2016 my friends, family, and colleagues. Work on your art, hone your craft, perfect your creativity, and NEVER STOP POUNDING on opportunity's doors. We've all got a lot to accomplish this coming year but I know we can pull it off, so long as we've got one another's backs!

[hoists an Irish Creme to you all]

I dunno, I happen to think a cowboy riding an ostrich makes a pretty unique statement. A choo-choo with square wheels on its caboose is an instant collectors' item, and I promise you I can think of PLENTY of uses (not all of them family-friendly) for a water pistol that squirts jelly.

I guess I really don't hate the Star Wars prequels at all. In fact, taken on their own merits, they're pretty freakin' epic. Maybe nowhere near the same class as Episodes IV and V (and dear LORD is there ever some wince-worthy dialogue), but pretty respectable space-fantasy adventure stories nonetheless. In particular I enjoy Ian McDiarmid and Ewan McGregor's performances, the undercurrent of political intrigue actually ADDS to the buildup, John Williams's score triumphs every time, and of course any time Yoda ignites a lightsaber the action goes so far beyond awesome it's untouchable. And Anakin's tragic final fall and swallowing-up never fails to coax tears out of me. Plotwise, there are definitely flaws --oh heavens yes-- but ultimately it works.

[sound of throat clearing] Attention. Episodes I, II, and III do not suck. Not in the least. There, I said it. Drum me out of the nerd brigade if y'all must.

Going to finish viewing the "original" trilogy and then my heart will at last be ready for Episode VII. I'm going into this guardedly, but hopefully with an open mind and a willingness to at least appreciate the art form for what it is.

Is this not incredible? For the first time in the comprehensive narrative of the human species, Pluto is no longer a vague grey circle with an asterisk (or a question mark) next to it:

My favourite part of the tale is the fact that the remains of astronomer Clyde Tombaugh are affixed to the hull of New Horizons. That's further out than any other human being has ever traveled.

Bang out a list of all the planets, in order. Put a checkbox next to each name. Up until today, a checkmark has existed in the box next to each of those --except Pluto. Today that box may be checked off.

Congratulations to the teams at JH's APL, the Southwest Research Institute, NASA, and everyone else who had a hand in this. Bask in the pride for a moment --before you set to work figuring out the answer to the next question!

I just passed beneath a full-size adult Brachiosaurus. It was wearing a Santa hat.

I like to think at some point while nobody was looking, it craned its neck down to floor level, plucked the hat off an unsuspecting airport vendor's wall of swag, and deftly flicked its neck to toss the hat up onto its own head, where it now sits at an appreciably jaunty angle.

For some unfathomable reason this whole spectacle makes me giddy-happy.

In a graduation ceremony that will, meteorologically speaking, never be forgotten, my eldest sloshed across the stage and picked up a soggy but still valid high school diploma.

'One Life and It’s Up to Us': Lebanon High Graduates Urged on Importance of 'Grit'

The rains held off until we were about two-thirds of the way through the list of names. At that point the heavens opened up and umbrellas were of little to no use. What was there to do at that point, but just laugh and try to make it fun? The grads seemed unfazed --the looks of triumph on their faces pretty much overrode everything else. Was really great having everyone present for this moment, regardless of weather conditions.

Quite a pathway this young man has walked, up to now. On to Phase II, whatever he decides that is.

I figured it was high time I updated my "inner circle" hereabouts as I've been mostly staying the hell away from social media except in the context of promoting The Monitor's Guild. There's an awful lot of steps still to take, between now and the July 4 kickoff date, and I dearly hope this pays off. Some other artists are contributing material, a honest-to-goodness professional pinup model cosplayed as one of my characters, and I've even commissioned a 30-second commercial. I'm now soliciting local comic book stores to carry the title (it's been just about as disappointing on THAT front as it was last year trying to find a publisher).

Some of you might have seen the video on my professional Facebook page where I held the first printed proof in my hands for the first time. I kept a straight face for the camera, but I assure you there were a LOT of emotions winking on and off in that moment:

More under here, including a link to aforementioned video. )

Sixteen year-old daughter just cut my hair this evening. (No, nothing drastic, just a few inches' worth of taming. I retain my Samsonian superpowers.) But I think this is the first-ever time she's cut my hair and there was something happy-making about it. She's still talking fairly aggressively about pursuing an education/career in cosmetology and I've offered to be her guinea pig if it ever became necessary.

Been a good week in spite of a frankly nasty (respiratory) illness that's been kicking my, The Bird's, and [livejournal.com profile] mama_hogswatch's asses in some measure throughout. Lot of missed work this week, and some frank uncertainty about the coming week. But at least in this moment, this "little while," there is tranquility and a quiet sense of hopefulness. Haven't permitted myself very many of those as of late.

A recent post from [livejournal.com profile] tacit prompted me to record a moment that stands out from this past weekend's Rhode Island Comic Con.

Possibility of trigger-pulling, but might still be important. )

Based on a hilarious suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] kyttle and the amazing [livejournal.com profile] svava, I give you:

There are helpful bureaucrats in this world. Some of them --in fact a great many of them-- are unimaginative plodders, concerned only with dogged adherence to The Rules even in the face of real-world situations, and function as little more than roadblocks.

But there are a few who, while still adhering to their basic job requirement of making sure The Rules get followed, do have it in them to recognize unique situations and are perfectly capable of breaking out of their roadblock role to get a problem solved. Folks with imagination, who recognize the unnecessary extra red tape when they see it and know how to cut through it. They are out there: perhaps even at your local DMV, or VA hospital, or some nearby Federal building. Remember to thank them when they make themselves known.

Eighteen years ago today I became a parent. Nothing particularly jaw-dropping or sky-shaking about that in and of itself, but this morning I confront the fact that a legal adult now lives under my roof.

I'm of course still responsible for that adult for the next year or so (he's still got one more year of high school to get through), but as of today he's pretty much free to pursue whatever life calling he wants. I can still advise and suggest and offer insights, but I can no longer invoke the old "because I'm the Dad and I said so" clause (not that I've actually had to use that for quite a few years, of course).

This evening there'll be a small cake and a handful of token presents --no massive celebrations or gathering of friends or family or anything like that. This comet blazed into my life 18 years ago, has just about finished its gravity-boost arc, and is now firmly back on its outward trajectory. What free elements that comet picks up now, has very little to do with me.
