Why do I always create 'em DAYS before the con? Can't I manage my time better? Sheesh...

May be a bit of a tear-jerker for some of you Xena fans... )

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] moonstaff!

Pretty good gig, musically speaking. [livejournal.com profile] moonstaff's voice was crystal clear and full of passion (having a properly functioning microphone helped tremendously), The Beast's guitar solos were inspired, and I could actually HEAR my keyboard --had been wondering exactly what it was I was playing. I recall exactly one screw-up, but we were able to adjust to cover it, and nobody was any the wiser. The regular crowd at Middle Earth Music Hall, however, I think was kind of blown away --Wednesdays seem to have evolved into a tradition of folk, mild country, and maybesome blues performers on a single acoustic guitar. Then we come along and knock 'em over with ballsy, loud rock. I don't think they knew what to make of us.

Ah, who cares. It sounded right to me, and I think [livejournal.com profile] moonstaff and The Beast were happy with it, too. Best part of the evening was the fact that our kids were allowed to stay up late and enjoy the show --they have no school today. My son said he enjoyed doing "grown-up things" (i.e., having a drink in a nightclub with friends, listening to some tunes). My daughter said we sounded great.

And just to round things out, there's snow on the ground this morning! What a way to spend a day off from school, huh? The prospect of the white stuff is a little unnerving, though; [livejournal.com profile] arcticelf probably said it best: "This is nature's way of gently reminding us to get snow tires and put the fricken plow on the tractor."

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ladytabitha and [livejournal.com profile] kitiara for steering me to this, then reinforcing it.

In keeping with the various leadership styles I've been studying, this little essay certainly seems to back up the recurring themes of "Try it," "Don't fix blame, fix the problem," "Don't waste time beating yourself up about it," and my favorite, "It's not failure, it's a successful way of finding out how something doesn't work." This is emerging as a mindset in an ever-widening list of admired leaders: from Harry Truman to Jimmy Carter, from Robert E. Lee to Colin Powell, from Julius Caesar to Lech Walesa, from Maria Montessori to John Moses Browning, from Walt Disney to Preston Tucker, and from Bill Gates to Ben & Jerry.

Okay, enough namedropping. The original source for this essay is: http://www.bloodletters.com/hackyourself.shtml

I shall now post the article, as per the author's wishes. )
