I support anywhere between 4 to 8 charities at any given time. As in, worthy organizations that legitimately help people in need, that get either my time or my money or both. And yet there's always someone who happens along that seems to think you're not being supportive enough of their particular cause, someone who chastises you for not "liking" their Facebook page or adding your name to a [fill-in-the-blank]-a-thon and won't hesitate to lay the guilt trip on you --in earshot of all your co-workers-- for obviously not "caring" enough.

Long story short: a particular local charity just lost all hope of ever receiving another dollar from me. This group is not an organization that in the least deserves to be snarled at, marginalized, or dismissed, but don't f**king try to emotionally blackmail me in public.

ADDENDUM: I've been trying to locate the interview --I wanna say it was in Playboy-- where Harrison Ford was asked what charities he supported. He said he wasn't going to list them, because as soon as the list saw print, there would be people upset about it: either because a) they were directly opposed to one of the charities, or b) they resent Ford supporting a particular cause because one of their causes was obviously so much more worthy of his time and money. I'm starting to think that the subject of a person's preferred charities should, socially speaking, be as much in the "none of your business" category as their personal finances, religious beliefs, or 99.9% of their politics.

Essentially, it's yet another variation on a truism originally driven home to me by [livejournal.com profile] bronxelf_ag001; that you do not get to tell someone --anyone-- what their priorities ought to be, or what they should be caring about the most.

Winner of Best Film and also Best Actor (Evan Marsh) at the Cohase Chamber of Commerce 3rd Annual 48-Hour Film Slam in Bradford, Vermont. Also starring [livejournal.com profile] nomoretoast as "Mary" and my 17 year-old son as "Nick":

This year's requirements for submission: use of an old-fashioned milk jar as a prop, conspicuous product placement of the Film Slam's sponsor, a location shot at the Bradford Falls, and inclusion of the line, "You want me to do what?"

Yes, after a lapse of some 25+ years, I'm going to be in a play. So here's where I shamelessly throw out a bit of self-promotion and invite you up to the mostly-uninhabited wilderness that is Bradford, VT, at the Old Church Theater in Don't Tell Mother!, its 2012 season opener. Originally written by Monk Ferris and directed by Paul Hunt, this comedy/farce revolves around the mishaps surrounding quiet, bookish Cinnamon Schmidt, who is an inadvertent witness to a (poorly-executed) bank robbery. Not only has the perpetrator twigged to her identity, but so have the feds --and in the middle of all this Cinnamon needs to make a good first impression on her fiancee's ill-humoured mother, and at the same time not letting her OWN mother find out what's going on! It's a roller-coaster of swapped identities, mistaken impressions, wayward oysters... and an overly-aggressive vaccuum cleaner with a singular (some might even say perverted) appetite.

Showtimes/dates are:
May 4 and May 5 at 7:30pm, May 6 at 4:00pm;
May 11 and May 12 at 7:30pm, May 13 at 4:00pm.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at: http://oldchurchtheater.org

Deep and introspective drama? Not at all. Fast-paced belly laughs? Hell yes. I'll leave off telling you about my role but I promise you it's deliciously ironic. [livejournal.com profile] mama_hogswatch also appears in this production, as well as [livejournal.com profile] nomoretoast --I'll leave off telling you what roles they play as well. It goes without saying that it would mean the world to me if you can come on out and join in the nonsense.

I'm in a freakin' play. Along with [livejournal.com profile] nomoretoast and [livejournal.com profile] mama_hogswatch. Y'all ready for this?

Come on out to Bradford, Vermont this May (4-6, and 11-13) to guffaw at the hilarity that is Don't Tell Mother!, a whirlwind of mistaken identity, coverups, extremely sudden undressings, tax evasion, and oysters. I'll be playing Joe, a totally-straight-arrow Federal agent who sincerely believes that honest innocent citizens have nothing to fear from their government (yes, savor that little irony).

Buy your tickets ahead of time and come on out to help us kick off the Old Church Theater's 2012 season with a few belly laughs!

Submitted as one of eight competitors at the Cohase Chamber of Commerce 2nd Annual 48-Hour Film Slam. (Yeah, that's me in the role of the villain.)

This entry kicked off the proceedings --had the audience laughing and warmed up. I'm hard-pressed to say which was my favorite of the evening, by the way; they were all outstanding. There was one other comedy, two dramas, a horror piece, 2 mystery/whodunnits, and even a 1910's-style "silent film." Amazing work by everyone involved, but of course here's where I'll have to give in to a bit of parent-ish pride --my son was the definite "newbie" in a crowd of more experienced filmmakers and even some film majors (most of whom had already done a couple of these Slams), but he held his own and is now counted among them.

From my perception, I think a new fire was kindled this weekend, in amongst the driving to and from all the different locations and the horrible eating habits and the sleep-deprived editing process.

Tonight at 7:30, the results of the Cohase Chamber of Commerce 48-Hour Film Slam will premiere. There will be popcorn.

I have been quietly stunned at the quality of work my son and his friend Zack ("Team Dragon") have been doing for their submission.

Come on out! Curtain goes up at 7:30, Bradford Academy. Admission is free. Stay the for the awards and see what eight incredibly talented groups of people can generate in 48 hours.

[livejournal.com profile] mama_hogswatch, my elder offspring and I had a wonderful time this evening meeting up at local watering hole Seven Barrel Brewery with longtime alt.callahans buddies [livejournal.com profile] valkyrwench and [livejournal.com profile] twfarlan. Despite being friends for nearly 15 years, we'd never actually connected in person.

Great evening; great to (at last!) connect. Naturally a toast was drank to our Patron And Founder, Spider Robinson --if not for him, we'd have never connected.

...getchyerself to Bradford, VT and enjoy an evening at the theater, to see "Enchanted April" by Matthew Barber. The folks at the Old Church Community Theater have really pulled together something delightful here: a romantic comedy that even my jaded teenage son frankly admitted to enjoying! Director Gloria Heidenreich has taken a plot that is at once both funny and touching, combined it into an English-style farce with relationship maturity issues, and assembled a brilliant cast to make it all happen. I especially defy you NOT to fall in love with the amazing "odd couple" rapport generated by Robyn Greenstone as the free-spirited-to-a-fault Lottie and Barbara Swantak as the almost-too-practical-for-her-own-good Rose.

Pick up your tickets here.

(My favorite scene.)

Go on, treat yourself. I promise you won't regret it.

If you're in the Upper Valley, run do not walk to Bradford, Vermont this coming weekend to see Wait Until Dark, the thriller by Frederick Knott.

Three unsavory con-men set up on the unsuspecting Susie Hendrix, a blind Greenwich Village housewife whose husband became an unwilling participant in a heroin smuggling operation. However despite her handicap, Susie soon twigs to the truth and, with the help of a nine year-old neighbor, sets in motion a plan of her own.

Showtimes: June 17 and 18 at 7:30pm, June 19 matinee at 4:00pm. Directed by Sheila Kaplow and starring [livejournal.com profile] nomoretoast as Susie Hendrix in what has simply got to be her most incredible performance to date. Get yourself some tickets and get ready to feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. I promise, you will not be disappointed. Call 802-222-3322 or visit http://oldchurchtheater.org.

...it's been a freakin' decade of Upper Valley residence. Seriously, I barely turned around and my 3 and 6 year-olds are thirteen and sixteen.

I'll freely admit to missing the house in Bradford that we occupied for all of 3 months --I have to wonder if my eldest would be tolerating a mural of Thomas The Tank Engine on his bedroom wall at this point... --grin--
